I got my new writer last week and really like the product - seems like good quality - although I need to buy the updated version for the new iPad.

One comment - would really prefer to have a brightness control in the top row buttons instead of music controls - I think that would be more useful for me to help save battery power by more easily adjusting brightness.

This information is very helpful. Will there be a pre-order option for the updated writer for the new iPad to have it shipped as soon as it is ready?

Hi Jon

Thanks for the response. Can I just ask EMS to return to sender? Will Adonit cover the shipping charges?

Dear Charles, thanks for your encouragement. You would need to return your Writer to Amazon.

I purchased mine through Amazon via your store there. Can you guys replace it as well, or should I just return it to Amazon? If that makes you feel any better, other companies are having the same issue including Zagg which I thought felt really cheap and bad quality when I played with it.

Dear Wayne and CM, I'll let you know as soon as I have any pricing information. CM, I would recommend you return the Writer Plus unopened, and let us know you want to replace it with an iPad 3 compatible unit.

What's the indicative pricing on this? I have 2 that is still in transit on shipment. I am not sure if I should just return them. Will Adonit do an exchange if I send them back unused?

We received our new iPad and have spent the weekend testing the new model with Writer Plus. Although they fit well together, it’s not perfect and that is not how we do things. We have noted a few minor tweaks we will make to ensure we give our customers the highest-quality product.

These tweaks include an adjustment of the magnet positioning which is not applying the sleep function appropriately. We want this transition to be seamless for you, and these changes will only take a few days to adjust. As a result we’ll have the new Writer Plus for the new iPad available for shipping on April 11th, 2012.

For those of you wishing to upgrade your Writer Plus for iPad 2 to the Writer Plus for the new iPad, we will be making a limited supply of replacement covers for sale via our website beginning on April 11th, 2012. If you would like to purchase an upgrade to match your current keyboard, we will have replacements for sale until supply runs out, and then they’re gone. We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding.

I'm sure this has been said before too... but it seems like your color choices were all built with the iPad black theme in mind.  It'd be nice to have an option (or at least a picture of a white iPad in your cases) for those of us not sticking with the traditional scheme.

Bluetooth 4.0 support would be a game changer as well because the batteries on both the iPad and keyboard would last so much longer before requiring a charge.

When Adonit does release a new iPad keyboard I strongly suggest inclusion of a dedicated dictation key, as there is in the soft keyboard for the new iPad. I am dictating this message now and find the feature very useful.

I'm sure I speak for the hundreds of people out there following this small forum with my $99 ready to order.  Unfortunate setback with the compatibility issues but definitely an opportunity to have your engineers release an even better writer plus for the new iPad.  Hopefully, the turnaround is quick.  I haven't found another case in the category that can compete... yet.

Ah, no worries Jon -- I know it wouldn't be reasonable to ask you to fix the issue using the warranty. Do you know if the issue is just with the iPad 3 turning off -- or if it also doesn't put the keyboard to sleep upon closing the case?

Daniel and Wayne, unfortunately I can't provide any additional details about a solution until I hear from our engineers; I just don't have any more information right now. I expect we'll know more in the next day or two. The Writer Plus wasn't designed for the iPad 3, so the fact that it doesn't turn off the iPad 3 isn't a warranty issue; however, you can still return it for a complete refund for any reason whatever, if you're within or close to your 30 day warranty (we will be flexible about this).

Also, if the keyboard remains the same in the iPad 3 model, is there a way we can just purchase the case alone or somehow get it swapped out?

Very sneaky of Apple to catch the 3rd party manufacturers offguard and break their products so that people stick with theirs.

It looks like Chris Smith may have nailed the problem by finding this video. So Jon, how long do you estimate before the current inventory you have manufactured can be modified so that their magnet polarities are reversed? If I bought your Writer Plus case from a different website/store, will I still be able to send it to you as a warranty issue and have my case's magnet modified or simply have the case replaced? Thanks!

Sorry for the double / triple posting. I was expecting the comment to be added at the bottom, and thought my comment didn't get added. Hopefully my cases will get shipped soon. I will try changing the magnet polarity manually when I get them to see if I can fix the problem.

Rudy mentioned that the keyboard also doesn't go to sleep when the cover is closed on an iPad 3. Can anyone who has the case verify this? Is there a way to at least turn the keyboard off manually before closing the case up?

Wayne,I put an iPad 2 in the same writer 2 case. and the cover hold seems to be the same as the new iPad when both are held with the spine horizontal with the ground. There is the same sound with both the iPad 2 and the new iPad when the case is closed. I don't see much of a difference between the two. There is no click with the new iPad because the click comes from the iPad as signal to the user that it is going to sleep. The cover will not wake or put to sleep the new iPad.

That is correct. It won't close tightly. It will hold, but not flat. I just tried it again with my son's iPad 2, and it is flush, and works beautifully. Since it's not "flush", it won't click, and won't lock the iPad.

Great, now I'm confused again. So it DOES snap into place with the magnets properly but not wake/sleep the device -- and the magnetic hold is just weaker?

March 17, 2012 07:27

Wayne, it does hold it...a bit less than the first generation on an iPad 2 but it does hold.

Thomas, that is a huge bummer. So the cover won't even stay magnetically in place when you carry it around?

March 17, 2012 07:22

Wayne, it does seem to have enough hold to keep the cover in place when the spine is horizontal to the ground.

Wayne it does not click, nor does not shut the iPad off.

Charles, once again, can you elaborate. Does it click and fit into place, but just not wake and sleep the device? Or does it not even click and fit into place.

the cover does not put the iPad to sleep when closed. It "works" if you take the iPad and fiddle with it, but not just closing and opening. Looks like the magnet placement was changed on this version of the iPad. does clicking on the lock on the top right hand of the keyboard achieve the same thing?

Can you guys elaborate on the smart cover issue. Does it click into place but just not sleep and wake the device? Or does it not even click into place properly because the magnets aren't aligned?

Chris, in all honesty in my opinion it is a minor defect. My only past experience was with the original writer and while the smart cover did work, it always seemed to be on when I removed the iPad from my bag which was annoying as hell. For me, now that I know about it,  this situation may actually be better given the new iPad's thirst for battery power. Shut the iPad off manually and not worry about it. Other than this issue, the case appears to be working well. The keyboard in comparison to the first generation is an amazing improvement, though I must say I miss the wrist rest feature of the original. Hate to say it, but the big looming issue with the case may be bluetooth and the potential benefits of a version 4 keyboard for battery life.

Thanks for submitting comment and giving everyone a heads up. Well that's a bummer -- both for a Adonit and also everybody that has the case and was hoping to use it with a new iPad. I hope there is a fix or perhaps there will be an extended return policy to get a new iPad 3 compatible version..

Karim is correct the smart cover on the writer doesn't appear to work for me either. Tested the iPad with an Apple smart cover and that one works. Moving the cover of the writer around a detached iPad will shut it off, but when the iPad is installed the writer case doesn't seem to find the sweet spot. Damn first glitch :-(

Karim -- when you say the smart cover isn't working to you mean the smart cover made by apple doesn't work wit the new iPad..? Or do you mean the smart cover's magnetic "off/on" feature of the Writer 2 Plus doesn't seem to be working with the iPad 3?

Been following this thread with much anticipation. Ended up purchasing the new writer 2 and hoping for the best. My report thus far is the iPad fits into the support, but there is a feeling that the additional weight is throwing things off just a bit. Don't think this is anything to worry about though.  Camera hole lines up perfectly. Keyboard pairs. Life looks good!

FYI. UPS just brought the iPad 3rd gen to my door step. It fits into the writer plus case. Paired successfully. Not having any issues so far. I'll update as I tap away if I run into any issues.

Hi Jon, thanks for the feedback. Mainly, I'm just worried about whether the camera hole will be big enough. Because I wanted a third-generation iPad case as soon as possible, I've still ordered the Writer 2 Plus. However, it would be great to know ASAP if the camera hole works.

Charles, you'll very likely be ok; you can always return it for a complete refund if it doesn't work. We don't want to make any official announcements until we've checked it out 100%, and that takes a little bit of time, but so far we've been perfectly happy with what we've seen.

Thanks Charles, we're aware of the dimensions and the port/button placement (the iPad 3 is a little thicker but should fit fine, and the port/button placement is the same), but there are other issues which had to be checked as well, including firmware compatibility. In order to be absolutely certain of compatibility we need a little time to test the iPad 3 with our Writer Plus. We're almost done now, and should be able to make a definite announcement very soon. What I can say is that it's looking very good, and we haven't found any incompatibility thus far.

Just came back from the Apple store. The new iPad3 will be exactly the same dimensions except for the weight which will be .1lbs heavier.

I'm obviously not working for Adonit, so, they will need to make the assessment, but based on Apple's comment, and their specs on their site, that's the only reason I can see why Adonit's competitors claim that they already have an iPad3 version which is basically the same...

We haven't been able to make any announcement about the iPad 3 up to now, since we didn't have enough information on the device; we didn't have the necessary information until Apple released the iPad (they don't send us their product specifications before release). However, we will shortly be making an announcement about compatibility of our Writer Plus with the iPad 3, once our technical staff have confirmed a few details.

I have a better question - why didn't Adonit have content ready for post launch?  I mean you must know by now what you are going to do to address the iPad 3 - tell people what the plan is so they don't go out and buy something else.  For a product that gets such great word of mouth, you need to hire a marketing person who is a bit more on the ball.  Think like a consumer.
